Learning Unlimited - Millennium Edition

The Software - Learning Unlimited - Millennium edition

The LU Software and how it works

This program is an upgrade to the original Learning Unlimited program. This program runs under Windows XP but can run under 95,98,2000, Me, NT and is NOT a DOS based program. Windows XP is highly recommended.   Major changes from the original program include: Y2K compatibility, easier answer input and grading, report features enhanced, special utilities to delete students, tests, view test history, back up data, export and import a student from another site.

Navigation
You can navigate through this program using the very visible buttons on the forms. You can also use the menus at the top of the form. In many cases, keyboard shortcuts are indicated by an underline of a letter on the button. In this case, use alt + the letter. Click to see main screen.

Register

Registering a student is both fast and easy.  Simply click on the Register New Student button. This will activate the Register Student form. Enter the first name, middle initial if you want (optional) and last name, student id number (social security number or whatever you choose), highlight the current semester, check the date (it should display today's date, if not change it.) Click submit.  This will add the student to the student data base.  You can then navigate back to the main menu, or enter the student answers by selecting the Take Test button. Click to see registration screen.

Grade a Test
To grade a test, select the test number under MABS or LABS. The date and time should be entered automatically for you.  Select the student from the list.  The student ID will be entered automatically for you.  Select the location for you facility.  If a student does not appear on the list, then click the can't find student button, to register the student. Note that student names are sorted by first name only.

Enter the answer in each box corresponding to the appropriate question.  You can use the a,b,c,d,e keys, or for fast one handed entry, you can use the h,j,k,l,; keys.  h corresponds to a, j corresponds to b, etc.  If you accidentally type a key that is not a-e or h-; you will get an error box.  You can use the backspace key to correct a mistake, or you can use the mouse to correct a box further back.

Once you have entered all of the answers, click the Grade It button. This button will close the Answer form and take you to the form which displays the profile and prescription for the student taking the test. Click to see grade test screen.

Test History
The Test History form is used after you enter the answers for a particular test. This form is also called when you want to view the results of any past test.  To view past tests use the Reports button on the main form.  You can choose to print the profile and/or prescription using the buttons or menu found on this form. The printer that is chosen by Windows for your computer will print out these documents. The prescription lists the objectives that  the student needs to work on.  These are the cross referenced  with your institutions lessons, and the student will work on those particular lessons until they are mastered. The profile indicates which objectives have been mastered and which ones have not.  An  "M" indicates mastery, in other words the student missed no questions for that objective.  An "N" indicates not-mastery, which means that the student missed one or more questions pertaining to that objective.  You will also notice some stars, such as  */***. This gives you more information. It tells you that the student missed 1 out of 3 questions for that objective.
Click here to see Test History screen.

Reports
The Reports button allows you to view the profile and prescription for any test taken by any student in your data base.  This is useful when a student loses their prescription and needs another printed out. The reports button takes you to the reports form. This form lists all the students in your database. Highlight a student  and  click test history. A new list box will appear with all the tests that student has taken at your facility. Highlight the test you want to view and click View Test.  This will bring up the Test History form, where you can print profiles and prescriptions. Click to see reports page.

Utilities

The Utilities button takes you to the Utilities form which allows for general program house keeping chores.

Click New Student file to start a new student data base.  This will overwrite any existing data base and erase all existing data.  You should use this button at the start of a new term. You may want to back up old terms data for archival purposes. To archive old data, back up the "student.dat" file to a diskette, and label the diskette with the appropriate term and year.

First, you can back up you student data file by clicking Back Up Data. Make sure you have a formatted diskette in a: drive.  This operation copies the file called "student.dat" to a: drive.  If you click Restore Data, then your current student data is wiped out and the  "student.dat" on the a: drive is copied to wherever you have the lu program installed on your hard drive. You can also backup your data by copying the "student.dat"  file in you lu program folder to any location that you desire. This is done through normal Windows copying procedures. Consult your tech assistant for more info on this

.
Next, if a student is transferring to another LU facility, you can export their data to a diskette, and send the diskette to the other facility. To do this, first select the Show All Students button. Highlight a student. Put a blank formatted diskette in a: drive. Click Export Individual Student button. Select a: drive. Click OK.  To import a student from another location, click Import Individual Student, select a: drive, scroll through the file list below a: drive and find the student name, then click OK.

The buttons on the left hand side of the Utilities form allow you to Show all students, Delete a student, Edit a student, Delete a student test, Sort the students, and clear the list box.

To delete a student, first click Show All Students, then highlight the student you want to delete, then click Delete a Student. To edit a student name, for instance, in case of misspelling, click Show All Students, then click Edit a Student. This will take you to the Register Student form. The student info will be entered automatically for you. Change anything you want, then click submit. This will permanently change the student info, but it will not delete the student tests, etc.

To delete a student test, click Delete Student Test.  This will take you to the Delete Student Test form. On this form, select the student  whose test you want to delete. Click, Show Tests for Student. In the new list box to the right, select the test you want to delete, and  click the delete test button.  Note that students may have only 30 test maximum in their history, so if for some reason , a student were to exceed this number and still wants to take more test, then you would use this option to delete a test or two. Students should sort automatically as they are registered.  If this does not occur for some reason, you can click the Sort Students button to sort the student list for you.
